Promoting a natural alternative to chemical head lice treatments

Head lice information: for parents

There are lots of sites offering advice to parents on how to treat children for head lice. Our view is that natural treatments are far safer than using the insecticidal lotions. But we don't have any medical qualifications. We're just concerned parents.

The most direct advice for parents provided by medical experts is on the UK Public Health Medicine Environmental Group's (PHMEG) website at www.phmeg.org.uk.

It's not an easy website to navigate, so we've reproduced all the information – word for word – on this site. The information is split into three sections under the general heading 'Notes for families':

  1. Have you got head lice?
  2. How to treat head lice
  3. Head lice – the truth and the myths

The pages do include some good information. But like many other government-sponsored sites, it favours chemical treatments rather than a more natural, 'bug-busting' approach.

Read – or download – our report if you'd like more information before spreading insecticidal lotions on your child's head.
