Health professionals stress that chemical treatments should never be used unless a live louse is found.
Only a close look will confirm whether it is a live louse, rather than dandruff, flakes of dry scalp (known as hair muff), dirt, or any other small insect which may have blown into the hair.
Head lice treatments fall into three main categories:
- Insecticide-based lotions
- Wet combing (often known as ‘bug busting’)
- Alternative treatments (such as essential oils)
